Diabetes mellitus type 2

Diabetes mellitus type 2

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body either does not use insulin effectively (insulin resistance) or does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Unlike type 1 diabetes, insulin is still present, but body cells fail to respond properly, causing glucose to build up in the bloodstream. It commonly develops in adults but is increasingly seen in younger people due to obesity, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. Symptoms may include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, slow wound healing, and recurrent infections. Many people may have mild symptoms in the early stages. Management focuses on lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular exercise, weight control, and medications or insulin if needed. Proper control of blood sugar levels helps prevent long-term complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
