Hydrocele

Hydrocele

Hydrocele is a condition in which fluid collects in the thin sac (tunica vaginalis) surrounding one or both testicles, leading to painless swelling of the scrotum. It is common in newborns but can also occur in adult men due to injury, infection, inflammation, or blockage of fluid drainage. The swelling is usually soft, smooth, and may increase gradually in size, often feeling heavy but not painful. In most cases, hydrocele does not affect fertility, but very large hydroceles can cause discomfort and interfere with daily activities. Diagnosis is made through physical examination and ultrasound imaging to rule out other conditions like hernia or tumors. Treatment may not be necessary if the hydrocele is small and symptom-free, but persistent or large hydroceles are usually corrected with a simple surgical procedure to drain the fluid and prevent recurrence.
