Dermatitis is a general term for inflammation of the skin that causes redness, itching, swelling, dryness, and sometimes blistering or cracking. It can occur due to allergic reactions, irritation from chemicals or soaps, infections, genetic factors, or immune system responses. Common types include contact dermatitis (from touching irritants or allergens), atopic dermatitis (eczema), and seborrheic dermatitis (often affecting the scalp and oily areas). The skin becomes sensitive and damaged, making it easier for germs to enter and worsen irritation. Symptoms can range from mild itching to painful, oozing rashes in severe cases. Treatment usually focuses on avoiding triggers, moisturizing the skin, using anti-inflammatory creams like corticosteroids, and managing infections if present. With proper care, most forms of dermatitis can be well controlled.
